For freedom Christ has set us free: This verse presents three problems: (1) a series of complicated textual variants; (2) the relationship of this verse to what precedes and follows; (3) and the meaning of the dative tę̄ eleutherią (“freedom”). First, some manuscripts introduce oun (“then”) after tę̄ eleutherią (“freedom”). Still others introduce the relative hę̄ (“which”), some before, some after, eleutherią.
